The man, identified as 29-year-old Dijon Kizzee, was gunned down after a violent confrontation with deputies that began when they tried to stop him on a bike for a code violation, according to the sheriff’s department.
Authorities said Kizzee fled the scene and a fight ensued when the deputies caught up to him.
Kizzee allegedly punched a cop in the face, dropping the clothes he was holding along with the firearm. The deputies then opened fire, fatally striking the man.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said Kizzee never grabbed his gun.
“He didn’t pick it up, but cops shot him in the back 20 times then left him for hours,” Crump tweeted Tuesday.
A nearby doorbell video, a clip of which was obtained by KABC, captured audio of at least some of the shooting where about 15 shots can be heard.
Kizzee’s death sparked a fresh round of protests, with crowds hitting the streets of Los Angeles Monday night and Tuesday.
