Story (7,5/10)

The school’s cultural festival is coming up, and thanks to Ms. Hiratsuka, Hachiman reluctantly joins the planning committee. Minami Sagami is also on the committee and volunteers as chairperson because she wants to “surpass herself”. Responsibility seems to be a foreign word for her, which is why she turns to the helper club. Yukino decides to become her right hand man, which Minami takes advantage of to shift all the work on to her and the others. Can Hachiman save the school festival and Yukino at the same time …?

Personaly thinking (Warning, spoilers!)

In episode 9, the viewer first gets to see further approaches between Yui and Hachiman. However, since the main focus of the anime is on the relationship with Yukino, Yui will probably take on the role of the rival in the long term. This is a common development in Rom-Coms, but I personally think it’s a shame that the outcome of the whole thing will be quite predictable in the following seasons.

The cultural festival and the associated preparations, however, take up the majority of the episodes in the volume. This is mainly due to the fact that the most important developments of the first season sometimes take place here. For example, Yukino has to learn that she also has to be able to rely on others.

Hachiman, on the other hand, tries to stay true to his own style. During a confrontation between him and Minami, something like an escalation occurs. The scene in question was particularly well staged in my opinion. In this way, Hachiman achieves the intended effect and can thus indirectly help Minami, but his image continues to fall into disrepute. Furthermore, doubts are aroused in the audience as to how well the protagonist can actually deal with the damage he has inflicted.

The 13th episode deals with a sports festival that should be spiced up with the support of the helper club. The episode stands on its own and can therefore be viewed as a bonus. The focus here is clearly on comedy, which made watching it relatively entertaining for me. However, the episode does not really end the season like episode 12.

Animations (7/10)

The animations from the house Brain’s Base continue to be solid. However, they also have the usual diseases of series production. For example, there are several shots that show the audience during performances at the cultural festival. Here, however, often only still images were used on which a simple effect was thrown. Since this is very noticeable here, there are slight deductions in the number of points.

On the other hand, the strong choice of colors and the successful backgrounds can be highlighted positively. The latter are also shown more often on their own this time as part of anchoring.

Music (8.5 / 10)

Unsurprisingly, we also get to hear Nagi Yanagi’s opening song “Yukitoki” for the last episodes of the season. As I noted in my last review, I like the song very much.

As for the ending, the song “Hello Alone” will be performed by Yukinos and Yui’s Japanese speakers. However, in episode 12 they add another vocal part. This is the song “Bitter Bitter Sweet”, which Yukino and Yui perform with a band at the cultural festival. You can listen to the song here:

The background music during the episodes is often characterized by thoughtful sounds. In my opinion, the selection of pieces was always appropriate.

German localization (8/10)

The German dubbing of “My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU” was created in the G&G Studios in Kaarst. Tom Sielemann was responsible for the dialogue book, Richard Westerhaus directed the dialogue.

Since the third volume is already the last episodes of the first season, the German main cast is already familiar at this point and, as expected, again delivered a good performance. That being said, the newly emerging characters are also well cast. From an acting point of view, no speaker has fallen out of the ordinary.

With regard to the dialogue book, I once again noticed that many terms from the youth language have found their way into it. The characters use English terms such as “weird” or “safe”, but also, for example, the word “man of honor”. Even if the dialogues will possibly age badly because of this, the formulations were always chosen relatively realistically for me.

In addition, a “My Hero Academia” reference was incorporated that did not appear in the original sound. For me this is another sign that a lot of effort has been put into the dialogue book.

Only the mix leaves something to be desired in my eyes. This could use more dynamism and adapt better to the spatial conditions of the event.

Packaging & Extras (7.5 / 10)

As with the previous volumes, we are offered a mediabook as packaging. In my case, this was unfortunately welded in at an angle, but this did not leave any permanent deformation. Otherwise, the workmanship is again very valuable. Fortunately, the fear in my last review that the third volume no longer fits in the slipcase has not come true.

As an obligatory extra, there is again a sticker sheet – these are likely to pile up with buyers of the series by now. The booklet was used again to provide space for sticking in the sticker speech bubbles. Even if it is meant nicely, one could certainly offer a more interesting extra from the production costs or simply fill the booklet with background information.

However, buyers can also expect an acrylic figure from Hachiman. This is certainly suitable to serve as a decoration in the showcase. The workmanship and the imprint made a high-quality impression in any case.

Some fans asked AniMoon in advance whether the OVA episode for the first season was included as an extra in Volume 3. However, the publisher gave no public information on this. In this case, silence is probably also an answer: Unfortunately, the OVA episode is not included as a bonus. Since this is presumably due to licensing reasons, it is of course not a broken leg. However, given the increased demand, I think it is worth mentioning at this point.

Conclusion

All in all, with the end of the first season, you notice that a lot has changed with the main characters since the beginning. Even if Yui and Yukino often disagree with Hachiman’s methods, you can still see that both of them are more widely accepted. You can also feel the friendly bonds that have developed in the helper club, even if at least Yukino does not want to admit this.

As far as the German publication is concerned, AniMoon can be praised for this in most respects. Compared to the publications of other publishers, the complaints here are usually at a high level.

Accordingly, I look forward to the German release of the second season, which follows almost seamlessly. This is accompanied by a new studio and a new art style. In addition, according to fan statements, the second season should be a lot more confusing – so it should be interesting …
