Story (7/10)

“The youth only has lies and evil ready!” – that is the point of view of Hachiman Hikigaya, the cynical and self-deprecating loner. When he delivers an essay with exactly this point of view, his teacher Shizuka Hiratsuka condemns him to work in his school’s helper club. To his regret, the only other member of the club is the pretty and smart Yukino Yukinoshita. Their only thing in common: their status as a loner. Despite all the opposites, they must work together to help students with their problems. Her first problem case is tough: the lively Yui Yuigahama. Will Hachiman’s negative view of society prove to be an obstacle or a tool that he can use to his advantage?

Personaly thinking

“My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU” is in some ways anything but a “normal” Rome Com-Anime. This is mainly due to Hachiman, who is very different from the usual main protagonists of this genre. With his cynical remarks, he mostly pokes at the Rom-Con genre himself and exposes its unrealistic scenarios. I liked this unusual approach. Despite Hachiman’s drastic attitude, I could often understand his demeanor, which made him appear more human.

In many other places, however, the anime makes use of the classic Rom-Com construction kit. For example, the series features the popular school setting and relies on the usual constellation of one male and two female main characters. But that’s not a big deal, because the title has to function as a parody of its own genre.

As for the actual plot, “My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU” is only slowly picking up speed. The first four episodes serve rather as an introduction to the most important main characters and seem a bit lengthy in places. Therefore I give the story a rather restrained rating of 7 points in the first volume. I assume that a real character development and with it a (hopefully) more interesting storyline will probably only begin in the following volumes.

Animations (7/10)

The animations for the first season were created in the studio Brain’s Base, before feel. seasons 2 and 3 took over. The style and character design of the first season are much more comic and simple. The focus of the plot is even more on the comedy aspect than in the later seasons. Therefore, the simple appearance underlines this feature and is therefore integrated well into the overall picture.

Since this is not an action anime, it is hardly surprising that mostly simple actions and movements are depicted. The fluidity of the animations is average.

I noticed positively the sharp image of the Blu-ray version and the lively color scheme, which at the same time does not seem too intrusive.

Music (7.5 / 10)

As the opening of the first season we get to hear the song “Yukitoki” by the singer Nagi Yanagi. I liked it a lot right away. Above all, I find the melody of the chorus particularly memorable here.

The first ending is the song “Hello Alone”. The text is sung by the two Japanese speakers from Yukino and Yui, which offers a nice touch. In my opinion the ending is a little less “catchy” than the opening. Still, I really like the piece.

The background music during the episodes is mostly light and inconspicuous. At this point in time, it may still be too early to make a final judgment. The pieces were not able to consolidate themselves enough in my memories to be able to isolate a main theme, for example. This effect is reinforced by the absence of real action scenes, in which experience has shown that the background music would come to the fore.

German localization (9/10)

The German dubbing of “My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU” was created in G&G Studios in Kaarst. Tom Sielemann was responsible for the dialogue book, Richard Westerhaus directed the dialogue. I am of the opinion that overall very solid work has been done here. The funny remarks in particular are well preserved in the German dialogue book. Sayings such as “You get me crazy about rice balls” have made me laugh many times.

The performance of the speakers and their cast on the roles could also convince me. Felix Mayer, for example, confidently delivers Hachiman’s cynical wisdom without appearing monotonous. Sarah Tkotsch also brings out the lively style of Yu very well.

With regard to the mix, a compressor that was a little too strong was used for my taste, which affects the sound dynamics. The result is reminiscent of a podcast in places, but this seems unnatural in synchronization. I was also able to detect a noticeable background noise in the voice recordings in quieter places. However, this is only noticeable with good headphones and a correspondingly good hearing and is therefore less important.

Another point that should be highlighted particularly positively in AniMoon publications is the image processing. As with other titles by the publisher, all of the texts and lettering were not only translated, but also seamlessly incorporated into the image. This solution is many times more elegant than corresponding subtitles and makes the publication look very high quality.

Packaging & Extras (9/10)

As usual from previous AniMoon publications, the packaging is again very high quality. First and foremost, I would like to mention the slipcase, which in my eyes has become particularly pretty. The workmanship also makes a very valuable impression overall.

The disc itself is in a beautifully designed mediabook. The sense of the “booklet” glued in there was not really fully understood by me. Apparently space was left here to stick the stickers supplied as “reactions” to questions from the characters. At best, this could offer children of primary school age a lot of fun to a limited extent. In my opinion, you could have done without that and instead printed facts or the like in the booklet.

The included acrylic figure is not really my cup of tea either. It looks different with the maxi poster. This one keeps what it promises and turned out really big. The slipcase motif is printed on one side in landscape format, which I think is very successful. The other side shows an artwork of the main cast in portrait format. In my opinion, this motif is much more boring, but this is not too tragic, as you can fortunately make the choice yourself with this reversible poster.

Conclusion

All in all, “My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU” offers a welcome change from the usual rom-com anime. The vicious attitude of the protagonist Hachiman also makes him kind of endearing. So far, the other two main characters are still looking down at him, but this will hopefully change over the course of the next few volumes.

So I look forward to an imminent development of the character structure in the coming episodes. At the same time, I hope that the plot will also gain tension without neglecting the healthy portion of comedy.

As expected, the German publication by AniMoon is of very high quality. Despite minor criticisms of the included extras and the German synchronization, the release leaves a positive overall impression.
