#Muv-Luv Alternative Anime Drops New Trailer, Premieres In October

The Muv-Luv Alternative anime adaptation has released a new trailer and visual, in addition to announcing staff and cast details. In addition, it was revealed that it will premiere in October this year.

The trailer centers on the show’s 3DCG mecha (known as Tactical Surface Fighters or TSFs in the Muv-Luv universe) and seems to depict a training session between several TSFs belonging to the United Nations. Meanwhile, visual depicts main characters Shirogane Takeru, Mitsurugi Meiya, and Kagami Sumika in the foreground with several flying TSFs in the background.

The visual includes the tagline, “Behold – this is the starting point.”

Muv-Luv Alternative‘s staff includes Yukio Nishimoto (Ongaku Shoujo) as director, Tatsuhiko Urahata (Sakura Wars the Animation) as series composer, Takuya Tani (One Room 3rd) as character designer, and Evan Call as music composer. The companies involve in the animation production include Flagship Line and Yumeta Company x Graphinica. (Flagship Line was established by Avex Pictures and Graphinica in 2018.)

Meanwhile, the cast includes Kôichi Kamiki as Takeru, Tomori Kusunoki as Sumika Kagami, and Karin Nanami as Meiya Mitsurugi.

Muv-Luv Alternative is based on a visual novel which first released in Japan in 2006. The Muv-Luv Alternative visual novel, a sequel to 2003’s Muv-Luv and its second half, Muv-Luv Unlimited, is set in an alternate Earth introduced in Unlimited, in which mankind is facing extinction from an alien race known as the BETA, and carries a notably darker and more serious tone than its predecessors. Muv-Luv and Muv-Luv Alternative were released on Steam in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

A previous trailer and visual for the Muv-Luv Alternative anime were released in August 2020. The anime was announced in October 2019.

Steam describes the visual novel as:

This is it. The chips are down, the die’s been cast, and the fate of the multiverse is on the line. Step back into the cockpit and prepare for deployment in Muv-Luv Alternative, the most critically acclaimed visual novel of all time. Just be sure to keep a box of tissues handy, because it’s about to be a bumpy ride.

This isn’t a cutesy high school rom-com anymore; it’s an epic tale of political conspiracies, international espionage, an alien menace, quantum causality, bittersweet reunions, genetic modification, and much, much more. Gluttons for punishment, rejoice, because once it gets rolling, there are no brakes on this pain train. It’ll test your limits, challenge your worldview, and by the time it’s all over, you’ll be so emotionally spent that it’ll be weeks before you can fully process the implications of what you’ve just witnessed. Fair warning, though: common side effects include feelings of emptiness, PTSD, and unrealistic expectations for any and all other visual novels.

The Muv-Luv franchise also consists of a number of spin-offs that include two previous anime adaptations. In 2011, there was a 24-episode anime adaptation of the Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse light novels from Ixtl and Satelight. In 2016, there was a 12-episode adaptation of the Schwarzesmarken (Schwarzes Marken on Crunchyroll) light novels from Ixtl and LIDEN FILMS, which story focused on the earlier days of the BETA invasion and took place in 1980s East Germany.
