#MTA honors heroic transit workers for saving fallen man from oncoming train

Transit officials on Wednesday feted an MTA worker who jumped in front of an oncoming train to save a fellow straphanger’s life.

Roberto Ritcher, a 27-year MTA veteran, made the heroic rescue at Jay Street-Metrotech station in Brooklyn just after noon on Tuesday.

“Roberto didn’t hesitate to act. He put himself in danger to help a fellow New Yorker, leaping onto the tracks to pull the man to safety,” Interim Transit President Sarah Feinberg said during a press event.

“He didn’t seem to flinch. He didn’t seem to take a second. He just jumped on the tracks. He know exactly what to do,” she said.

Ritcher told reporters he was waiting for the subway when he heard a loud pop and saw an elderly man lying in the tracks.

He and another rider pulled the man off the tracks “seconds before” the train arrived, the MTA said. But the hero workman didn’t even see the C train entering the station, he admitted.

“You don’t hesitate when you see a helpless person like that,” he said. “The way he was, the way I looked at him and he was bleeding, it’s immediate.”

“That’s a 70-year-old guy. I was just like, ‘I gotta get him out.’”

Station cleaner Cha-Nikka Cheatham, also feted by Feinberg, saw Ritcher jump onto the tracks from another platform and ran to get medical assistance, then to Ritcher to provide additional support.

“When he jumped down, I ran up the stairs to come over and it was like blood everywhere,” she said.

“I had cloths, gloves, so I just started giving it to everybody. Whoever came on the scene, I was giving them everything.”

Feinberg praised both employees.

“They’re truly selfless actions yesterday exemplify what transit employees do every day in caring for the million of people that use our system,” she said.
