When you buy the latest iPhone or Samsung Galaxy device, you expect it to pack new features that its predecessor lacked. You may also find yourself paying more money for those improvements. But Motorola is turning this common wisdom on its head with the latest iteration of its Moto G Stylus smartphone.

The 2022 Moto G Stylus is an odd mix of upgrades and downgrades. It lacks a 5G modem—the defining feature of its predecessor. It also uses a slower MediaTek Helio G88 processor, still lacks NFC, still runs Android 11 (instead of Android 12), and retains the 6.8-inch display size.

MotorolaAt a glance, these specs are a huge disappointment. But they may actually make the 2022 Moto G Stylus a better phone. Without 5G support or a Snapdragon chip, Motorola can focus on the things that truly matter when purchasing a budget phone; battery life, camera quality, display quality, and price.

The new 2022 Moto G Stylus now features a smooth 90Hz display, which should make the stylus functionality feel a bit more fluid. Its battery is boosted from 4,000mAh to 5,000mAh and should last two days on a charge. Plus, Motorola increased the RAM from 4GB to 6GB and replaced the old 48MP main camera with a 50MP sensor.

These are significant changes that should improve the overall experience of using a Moto G Stylus, so long as you don’t care about 5G. And better yet, these changes come with a price decrease. Last year’s Moto G Stylus 5G costs $400, but the new model is just $300.

You can pre-order the new Moto G Stylus at Motorola’s website. It ships sometime in the next few months.
