#Monopoly Live-Action Movie is in the works; Possible Plot + Release Date

IP-based movies seem like a hot commodity in theaters right now. After Mattel’s famous Barbie doll receives a live-action movie, which was a success by the way, it wouldn’t be surprising that other brands would follow suit. One of which is the global entertainment brand, Hasbro. In partnership with Lionsgate, Hasbro is reportedly working on a movie inspired by one of the biggest board games in history, Monopoly. Everyone is ecstatic on the outcome of this much-awaited movie. Here is everything we know about the Monopoly movie.

A Monopoly movie is in the works

A few days ago, Lionsgate closed a deal that would allow the company to finally own Hasbro’s TV and movie department, eOne (Entertainment One). Lionsgate reportedly acquired eOne in a $500 Million deal which would bring in a package that includes eOne’s current employees as well as 6,500 non-Hasbro content, titles, and products. This also includes shows like The Rookie (2018-present), Yellowjackets (2021-present), and Naked and Afraid (2013-present).

Meanwhile, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks said during a press release that: “Entertainment remains a priority for Hasbro. Hasbro will continue to develop and produce entertainment based on the rich vault of Hasbro-owned brands. We will also bring to life new original ideas designed to fuel all areas of Hasbro’s blueprint including toys, publishing, gaming, licensed consumer products, and location-based entertainment. As part of the sale, we expect to move to an asset-lite model for future live-action entertainment, relying on licensing and partnerships with select co-productions.”

With eOne’s transition from Hasbro to Lionsgate, a current project they are doing will be continued to another studio. Hasbro was reportedly making a live-action movie based on the popular board game Monopoly.

Following Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie’s huge success at the box office and already on the verge of the $1 Billion mark (Barbillion), Hasbro will follow Mattel’s footsteps by creating another movie based on an iconic toy. The toymaking company giant has reportedly working on this project for a while. There were rumors a few years ago that award-winning director Ridley Scott would spearhead a possible Monopoly movie. However, that did not come to fruition. at some point, another rumor with a speculated Monopoly movie development includes names like Kevin Hart and Tim Story. Long story short, that also did not come to reality.

As of this writing, no release date window for the live-action adaptation of Monopoly has been announced by Lionsgate and Hasbro. But, we’d like to think it’ll come out around 2025. With the current SAG-AFTRA strike, writing and filming in the U.S. is still halted, thus making a case for a delay in production.

Monopoly movie possible plot

At this stage, nobody can say what the Monopoly movie’s plot would be like. However, as avid fans of toys, board games, and cinema, we could think of possible storylines about the upcoming movie.

Technically, Paramount’s Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2022) is a Hasbro IP-based movie about the legendary tabletop board game of the same name. Just like D&D, the Monopoly movie could also be about the characters being immersed in the real setting of the game. Maybe a simulation role-playing game like Free Guy where you can purchase and/or sell properties while also doing other interesting stuff.

Another thought that would come to mind is an Isekai-type of story where a family playing the Monopoly board game mysteriously gets sent to an unfamiliar magical world ala Jumanji.

Well, if Lionsgate feels like they want to go to something more serious, they may take points from the 2025 dramedy movie, The Big Short. If you’ve seen this movie, it’s basically Monopoly in real life.

Which Hasbro-owned IPs could become movies in the future?

Hasbro owns popular IPs (Intellectual Properties) like Transformers, Peppa Pig, Magic: The Gathering, My Little Pony, Play-Doh, Power Rangers, and Clue. Transformers and Power Rangers already received tons of live-action and animated movies in the past, but with a new direction, we could see the franchise’s reboot in no time. But, we’re going to have to wait for further announcements.
