Isaiah Benloss, 18, suffered head trauma in the crash on Ocean Avenue on Aug. 18 and remains in a coma under a doctor’s watch, his mom said. Police have yet to find the people who were in the car that struck the for-hire vehicle.
“My son had just left his friend’s house and was in a Lyft,” mom Jayra Espada said. “Three minutes before reaching home, a car speeding crashed into the Lyft, which crashed into a parked car. My son and the driver of the Lyft had to be cut out. My son suffered brain trauma. He’s been in a coma ever since.”
The 34-year-old for-hire driver was operating a Toyota Camry with TLC plates on Ocean Avenue around 3:30 a.m. when the driver of a four-door Audi sedan heading east on Beverly Road struck the Toyota.
The Audi, which had temporary New Jersey plates, had three occupants inside the vehicle. They all fled on foot, cops said.
“As a mother and as a human being, I would expect them to stay, but they didn’t and have been on the run ever since,” the mom said. “I know my son was just listening to his mother. I’m always telling him to take a car if it’s late. My son is the greatest kid you could ever meet.”
She said Benloss played varsity basketball at Lincoln High school from where he graduated in June. He was attending the College of Staten Island, she said.
Now his future is uncertain.
“The best they can do is to let him heal from the swelling,” she said of the doctors at Kings County Hospital. “If he wakes up, they’ll go from there to see how much damage has been done to the brain. Some people don’t wake up. Some people are unable to move.”
“I’m currently in the hospital with him 24 hours a day,” said the mom, who said a GoFundMe.com page started by a friend will help pay the bills.
She begged the Audi driver and passengers to come forward.
“Have some type of remorse as a human being,” she said, crying. “It’s not going to help my son, but I don’t feel comfortable when you’re out joyriding and you could mess up somebody else’s live the way you messed up mine.”
