#MLB investigating how Marlins’ coronavirus outbreak began

The league is trying to determine the cause of the team’s coronavirus outbreak, as first reported by USA Today and confirmed by The Post. Sixteen players and two coaches have tested positive for the virus in recent days, prompting their season to be paused for a week.

The Phillies, Yankees and Nationals had to postpone multiple games due to the outbreak as well, although MLB reported that no other teams have had positive cases involving on-field personnel since Friday when the Marlins mayhem began.

Members of the Marlins could forfeit part of their salary due to the outbreak, though the league has yet to make a decision, according to USA Today. As part of the agreement reached between the league and players association for the abbreviated 2020 season, players will receive full prorated pay for the number of games their team plays.

But since they weren’t responsible for the outbreak, members of the Phillies, Yankees and Nationals will not be docked pay, according to the report. The league will delay a decision regarding the Marlins until it is determined how many games they miss, and whether there were safety protocol violations that led to their outbreak.

“The difficult circumstances of one club reinforce the vital need to be diligent with the protocols in all ways, both on and off the field,” MLB said in a statement Monday. “We will continue to bolster our protocols and make any necessary adjustments. The realities of the virus still loom large, and we must operate with that in mind every day.”
