Minneapolis will remember George Floyd with a permanent memorial alongside the murals and other tributes that sprang up after his May 25 death in an encounter with police.

The city has received $50,000 from the National Trust for Historic Preservation to both build a memorial and preserve the ones already in place, TMZ reported. The “Vision Grant” comes through the trust’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund.

Already, Minneapolis has had more than 40 listening sessions with community members on how to honor Floyd best.

The city has earmarked 38th Street and Chicago Avenue, where Floyd took his last breath, as the location for a memorial. Officials also might name a street or community center after Floyd or erect a memorial plaque, the news outlet reported.

Officer Derek Chauvin, who put his knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly eight minutes, is charged with second-degree murder in the case. Thomas Lane, J. Kueng and another officer, Tou Thao, are charged with aiding and abetting.

All are now off the force.
