#Miley Cyrus’ musical influences are a who’s who of rock

Miley Cyrus has been soaking up sounds since she was a kid. It all started with her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, whose music is in her blood and whose country influence could be heard on her last album, 2017’s “Younger Now.” But as the “Wrecking Ball” singer’s new LP, “Plastic Hearts,” arrives Friday, it’s clear that her heroes extend far beyond home. Here, a look at some of the stars that shape Miley’s musical universe.

Stevie Nicks

In a cross-generational collaboration of our dreams, Nicks joined Cyrus for the “Edge of Midnight (Midnight Sky Remix).” Mashing up Cyrus’ “Midnight Sky” — the first single from “Plastic Hearts” — and Nicks’ 1981 classic “Edge of Seventeen,” the remix is a delight of white-winged doves. Of course, anyone with ears could already tell that Cyrus was nicking off Nicks when “Midnight Sky” came out in August.

Joan Jett

It was clear that Cyrus couldn’t be tamed when she began covering both Jett and her old band, the Runaways. Over the years, she’s performed everything from the Runaways’ classic “Cherry Bomb” to the Joan Jett & the Blackhearts anthem “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll.” Now these two badass chicks are pairing up for “Bad Karma” on “Plastic Hearts.”

Debbie Harry

When Cyrus covered Blondie’s 1979 hit “Heart of Glass” at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in September, it went over so well that fan demand led her to release a live version. Her punk-spiked rendition also got the ultimate co-sign from Harry: She tweeted that the younger singer’s take was “divine,” winking at the song’s lyrics.

Dolly Parton

The country queen is not only one of Cyrus’ musical forebearers — she’s her godmother. So it’s no surprise that Miley will always love Dolly. She’s displayed her devotion by covering “Jolene” a number of times over the years. And Cyrus spreads some holiday cheer with Parton on “Christmas Is,” a track off the new yuletide collection “A Holly Dolly Christmas.”

Billy Idol

Having rocked out a cover of “Rebel Yell” at “VH1 Divas” in 2012, Cyrus proudly showed her Idol worship. And clearly the man approved: He joined Cyrus for a “Rebel Yell” duet at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in 2016. Now the two are making original music together, synchronizing snarls on the “Plastic Hearts” track “Night Crawling.”

Pharrell Williams

Cyrus teamed with Mr. “Happy” on her 2013 hit album “Bangerz,” with Williams producing two tracks: “4×4” and “#GETITRIGHT.” Then she returned the favor by dropping some guest vocals on his 2014 single “Come Get It Bae.”

Britney Spears

Of course, Brit set the template for graduating from Disney stardom to pop princess-ness. You can be sure Cyrus had her sights set on that same career trajectory back when she was acting on “Hannah Montana.” And by the time she and Spears collaborated on the “Bangerz” track “SMS (Bangerz)” in 2013, Miley had developed into a kind of Britney 2.0.
