#Mets will have fake crowd noise accompany artificial fans

In a dress rehearsal for the season, music blared between at-bats and crowd “chatter” could be heard during Wednesday’s intrasquad scrimmage at Citi Field.

And as baserunners sprinted toward home plate, the fake crowd roared.

The Mets are among the teams, according to a club source, planning to employ such noise in their fan-empty ballpark once the regular season begins. The piped-in crowd noise will join the cutouts of fans in the stands that are available for season-ticket holders and others willing to pay a fee for the customized placards.

Jeurys Familia was greeted by “Danza Kuduro” — his usual entrance music — upon arriving to the mound. As for the crowd noise, Familia said he ignored it.

“I’m so focused, my concentration is so high on that mound that it’s the last thing on my mind, the sound of the fans,” Familia said.

As groundskeepers watered the infield after the scrimmage, “Back in the New York Groove” blared through the speakers for a test run.

Robinson Cano’s potential availability for the season gained momentum, as he played three innings at second base and took two at-bats in the intrasquad scrimmage. Cano returned to camp Tuesday after missing a week of workouts for an undisclosed reason.

“He’s in good shape, so we’re going to progress him in innings throughout these days,” manager Luis Rojas said.

Johneshwy Fargas has a niche that could place him on a 30-man roster to begin the season. Last year, Fargas stole 58 bases in the minor leagues. Fargas was on the club’s radar during spring training after hitting for the cycle in a Grapefruit League game. With a rule change that will place a runner on second base to begin all extra innings this season, Fargas could become a specialist.

“He can do some other things on the field, and play a quality center field as well,” Rojas said. “It’s great to put him out there and for him to work and feature that speed for us and the rest of his teammates and at the same time make our pitchers work on holding him and containing him from doing that. We are taking advantage of those guys that we have.”

Brad Brach and Jared Hughes were both placed on the injured list. Neither reliever has appeared in camp.

Gordon Beckham hasn’t been in camp the past two days, according to Rojas. Beckham is attempting to make the team as a backup infielder.
