#Mets sign Jose Martinez to $1 million split contract

The Mets’ search for low-risk, potential high-upside depth brought them to completing a deal with Jose Martinez on Thursday.

Martinez, a veteran 1B/OF who spent last season with the Cubs and Rays, agreed to a one-year split contract with the Mets that will pay him $1 million if he makes the club.

A right-handed bat, the 32-year-old Martinez struggled last season, but owns a career .915 OPS against lefties. Martinez’s addition could be a hint that the Mets expect the DH to return in the National League.

But the Mets could also use the additional bat off the bench, especially right-handed. As it stands, the Mets have Luis Guillorme and Robel Garcia on the 40-man roster as backup infielders and Guillermo Heredia as a reserve outfielder.
