#Mekhi Becton appreciates what Carl Lawson brings to Jets camp

The largest player on the Jets roster has been eating humble pie all summer — and liking it.

After a solid rookie season, 363-pound left tackle Mekhi Becton is being taken to school during training camp by defensive end Carl Lawson, who is in the offensive backfield more often than any of the four running backs in the rotation. Instead of sounding unnerved or defensive of his performance, Becton seems thankful for Lawson’s addition so he is better prepared for opponents like the Giants last Saturday in the preseason.

“It was really slowed down for me not going against Carl every day,” Becton said. “He made it a whole lot easier for me. I think I did pretty good.”

The Giants didn’t play their starting defensive line, including Leonard Williams off his 11.5-sack season. Lawson has never had more than 8.5 sacks in a season, but looks primed for a breakout year after signing with the Jets in free agency.

“After the first drive, I went up to him and said, ‘I appreciate you, bro. You made me a whole lot better. They have nothing on you,’ ” Becton said. “We all felt that difference of our D-line and going against another D-line.’”

Becton graded as the NFL’s No. 31 offensive tackle — No. 3 among rookies — last season, according to Pro Football Focus. He allowed 23 pressures (seven sacks) on 412 pass-blocking snaps, but he has been no match for Lawson, who had two more “sacks” in Monday’s practice.

“He’s definitely a different type of guy to block because he is going 100 percent every time,” Becton said. “He is lower to the ground, and he’s got power and speed.”

The Jets will hold two joint practices against the Packers later this week. Becton could draw another of the NFL’s best pass-rushers in Za’Darius Smith, maybe with an introduction made by Smith’s former Ravens teammate C.J. Mosley.

“I’m definitely looking forward to it,” Becton said. “I can pick his brain and figure out what kind of things I can do differently. And hopefully lock him down.”

The Jets waived kicker Chris Naggar after he made a 30-yard field goal and missed badly to the left on a 53-yarder against the Giants. He already is the second kicker cut in camp (Sam Ficken). Matt Ammendola, who has never attempted a regular-season field goal, is the only option on the roster, meaning the Jets could be looking for an answer before Week 1.

One of the most interesting matchups of the joint practices will be the Jets cornerbacks against Davante Adams and the rest of Aaron Rodgers’ targets.

“We feel like we’ve got really good receivers here and [our cornerbacks] have been competing their butts off against them, and it’s going to be no different with Green Bay,” coach Robert Saleh said. “A lot of respect for the ones that they’ve got over there, and it’s just a great opportunity for us to go compete.”
