KUROMUKURO, a 2016 original TV anime featuring a time-slipped samurai fighting off alien invaders in near future Japan, is celebrating its fifth anniversary with a crowdfunding campaign that seeks to sponsor a physical print copy of the 2018 sequel novel (previously published in ebook form) and a live cast event to be held in Toyama in September of 2021.

The campaign seeks to raise 3 million yen (approximately $27,587 US) and it runs from June 09 – September 07, 2021 on the BUNCA website. The planned stage event in Toyama is scheduled for September 19, 2021, and it will feature voice actors Yohei Azakami, M・A・O, and Reina Ueda as well as director Tensai Okamura, series composition / sequel novel author Ryô Higaki, and producer Kenji Horikawa. A collaboration cafe is also planned to be staged in Toyama from June 10, 2021.

KUROMUKURO is directed by Tensai Okamura and features animation production by P.A. Works. The series is currently available via streaming in the United States and other regions via Netflix and on home video via Pony Canyon USA, who describe the story of KURUMUKURO as follows:

During the construction of the Kurobe Dam, an ancient artifact was discovered, and so the United Nations Kurobe Research Institute was established. Intellectuals from all over the world gathered to study the object, and the children of those researchers attend Tateyama International High School, including the institute head’s daughter, Yukina Shirahane. In the summer of 2016, a lone samurai once again awakens.
