“Maverick in Japan With 12.95 Billion Yen”

One Piece Film Red has earned over 12.95 billion yen (~US$92.17 million) in Japan, making it the 21st top-grossing film in the country.

One Piece Film Red had reached the 29th spot at the end of August. Its new ranking means that it has surpassed the popular Top Gun: Maverick Tom Cruise movie, which currently sits at 26th place.

A third trailer was released to celebrate the film’s domestic box office success.

The anime film, which is the 15th One Piece movie, continued to dominate the Japanese weekend box office as well, remaining in the top spot for the fifth week in a row with a gross of 697 million yen (~US$4.96 million). Kogyo Tsushin also reported that the film has drawn in over 9 million moviegoers.

One Piece Film Red premiered in Japan on August 6 and passed the 10 billion yen mark on August 25. It is directed by Gorou Taniguchi (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;SurrectionOne Piece: Taose! Kaizoku Gyanzakku) with Tsutomu Kuroiwa (One Piece Film: Gold, GANTZ:O) as scriptwriter, Masayuki Satou (One Piece Film Strong World character designer and animation director) as character designer and chief animation director, and One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda as general producer and original story creator.

The movie features a major new character called Uta (Kaori Nazuka; singing voice Ado), a diva who is also Shank’s daughter. One Piece Film Red‘s soundtrack has proven to be highly popular in Japan as well. At the time of writing, the second to fifth spots on the Japanese Billboard Hot 100 chart are occupied by songs from the Uta no Uta One Piece Film Red album, while the album itself is ranked second on the Hot Albums chart. Uta no Uta One Piece Film Red is also currently the second best-selling album on Amazon Music Japan.

Animated music videos were released for the songs, with the first, “New Genesis,” racking up over 49 million views since its June 15 premiere.
