By blasting his niece’s tell-all book as “stupid” and “vicious,” President Trump might actually be helping it sell, according to the book’s publisher.

Jonathan Karp, CEO of publisher Simon & Schuster, on Thursday said that Mary Trump’s “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man” has been flying off the shelves with more than 1.35 million copies sold in all formats in its first full week on sale. And he attributed at least some of the boom to readers’ interest in “unusual families,” saying people are likening it to Mario Puzo’s “The Godfather,” first published by G. P Putnam & Sons in 1969.

“Mary Trump’s memoir has transcended the usual ceiling for political books to reach a larger audience of people who want to read about unusual families,” Karp said. “We’re thrilled to see how deeply the book has touched readers and thrilled to have people compare the book to The Godfather.”

S&S has sent the book back for a 17th printing. Hardcover sales alone amounted to 337,473 copies, according to NDP Bookscan, which tracks 80 percent of the retail market. The combined sales figure includes pre-orders, print books, e-books and e-audiobooks.

In addition to being the runaway bestseller in the US, “Too Much and Never Enough” is also No. 1 in Canada, Great Britain, and Ireland, and No. 2 in Australia, according to S&S.

The president’s brother Robert Trump had gone to court to try to block the book’s publications, claiming it violated a non-disclosure agreement from nearly 20 years ago that Mary Trump had signed when she contested the will of the family patriarch, Fred Trump. But a NY state appeals court OK’d the release.

Over the weekend, Trump told “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace that he was most hurt by the book’s claims against his parents.

“She was not exactly a family favorite. We didn’t have a lot of respect or like for her. I would’ve never said that except she writes a book that’s so stupid and so vicious, and it’s a lie. My father was a great, wonderful man,” Trump told Wallace.

Trump’s niece described the president’s father, Fred Trump, as a “hard-functioning sociopath” who psychologically damaged his son.

“For her to say, I think the word she used was psychopath, what a disgrace. She ought to be ashamed of herself. That book is a lie,” Trump told Wallace.
