An off-duty NYPD detective working security for “Good Morning America” helped bust a man wearing a police department sweater as he walked with a holstered weapon that looked like a handgun outside Times Square Studios early Tuesday, police sources said.
The 31-year-old suspect first pulled up in front of the studio on Broadway near West 44th Street around 5:15 a.m. in a car decked out with thin blue line American flag and U.S. Army decals, police sources said. He briefly chatted with the cop and then stepped away.
An hour later, the detective, who worked security for a company contracted out by GMA, noticed him walking around with a holster on his waistband holding what appeared to be a handgun.
The guard notified other NYPD officers who were working paid detail security at ABC, the sources said.
Two officers approached the suspect, told him to put his hands up and took the weapon out of the holster without incident, according to the sources.
It turned out to be a BB gun, the sources said.
The man was brought to the Midtown South Precinct stationhouse with charges pending.
The suspect, of Queens, has a history as an emotionally disturbed person, according to sources.
He has prior arrests for grand larceny.
