#Man accused of attacking NYPD cop with chain assaulted first responders

The psychiatric-facility patient accused of trying to strangle an NYPD officer on Thursday night is a convicted, serial cop-hater who was convicted of assaulting a police officer and an EMT in Florida earlier in the year, sources said.

Levon Wheeler, 30, who has been charged with the alleged attack on a cop in Noho, served 87 days behind bars for roughing up the two first responders in Orlando last March, law enforcement sources said.

The career criminal has 29 prior arrests in four different states, and his disdain for law enforcement goes back to when he was busted for stealing a pair of boxing gloves from a Manhattan sporting goods store in 2013, sources alleged.

“Get out the way, I’m gonna punch you,” Wheeler told police after he was caught snatching the merchandise from Paragon Sports in the Flatiron District that year, according to sources.

Wheeler first got in trouble with law when he was arrested at the age of 14 in 2004. Since then, he’s racked up 28 more arrests, mostly in Massachusetts, sources said.

As of late Friday, Wheeler, a resident of a Wards Island psychiatric facility, was still awaiting his arraignment after allegedly shoving a cop to the ground and trying to strangle the officer with a chain during a post-election protest at Bond Street and Broadway.

His latest arrest resulted in charges of assault, criminal obstruction of breathing, resisting arrest, obstruction of governmental administration and disorderly conduct, police said.
