#Makoto Shinkai’s Next Movie Gets Fall 2022 Release Date, Title and Poster Revealed

Makoto Shinkai‘s next movie, titled Suzume no Tojimari, will premiere in Japan in Fall 2022. A poster was also released.

Shinkai describes the film as a “road movie,” a “modern adventure story,” and an “action movie.” The story sees protagonist Suzume embarking on a journey across the Japanese archipelago to close the Door of Calamity. Aside from Suzume, the story will also involve a “certain being.”

The staff includes Masayoshi Tanaka (Weathering With You and Your Name co-character designer, Her Blue Sky) as character designer, Kenichi Tsuchiya (Flavors of Youth “Love in Shanghai” character designer, Your Name) as animation director, and Takumi Tanji (Your Name co-art director, Children Who Chase Lost Voices) as art director. Shinkai is the writer and original creator in addition to being the director. CoMix Wave Films is the animation production company.

The film is currently in production. Comic Natalie reports that planning took place from January 2020 to March 2020, while the scriptwriting was done from April to August of the same year. The storyboarding took place from September 2020 to December 2021, while the animation process began in April 2021.

The movie’s English title has not yet been decided.
