In a surprise revelation, Hollywood industry newswire Deadline is reporting that author Akihito Tsukushi‘s Made In Abyss manga is getting the Hollywood film treatment with a live-action film under active development at film studio Columbia Pictures.

As is becoming more common with such developments and productions, Masi Oka (from the TV series Heroes) is attached to the project along with producer Roy Lee under his Vertigo Entertainment production house and writer/director Kevin Mc Mullin handling the adaptation. Made in Abyss has inspired a TV anime along with an animated feature film series.

A second season of the TV anime is currently in production for release in 2022 along with a tie in video game also being released in the same year. Seven Seas Entertainment currently publishes the manga in the US and describes the manga:

In an age when the corners of the world have been scoured for their secrets, only one place remains unexplored–a massive cave system known as the Abyss, filled with monstrous creatures and lost relics. Those who delve into its depths are known as Cave Raiders. A young orphan named Riko dreams of following in her mother’s footsteps as a Cave Raider, and when she meets a strange robot while exploring the Abyss, she is one perilous step closer to achieving her goal!
