Mac Miller‘s fans and friends have marked what would have been the late rapper’s 31st birthday with a number of tributes across social media.

Mac (real name Malcolm McCormick) passed away at the age of 26 after an accidental overdose on September 7, 2018. Shortly after Miller’s death, L.A. County Coroner’s Office confirmed he had died due to a lethal combination of fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol in his system.

Three accused drug dealers, who prosecutors said supplied Miller with counterfeit oxycodone laced with fentanyl, were later charged in connection with his death. Two of them have been sentenced to at least 11 years in prison.

Mac Miller was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and rose to prominence in the 2010s. His debut mixtape, K.I.D.S., was met with glowing reviews and the young rapper was soon inducted into the XXL Freshman Class of 2011 alongside Kendrick Lamar and Meek Mill.

From there, Miller would go on to release five more commercially and critically successful albums. His posthumous sixth album Circles was released on January 17, 2020.

On Thursday (January 19), his former label home, Rostrum Records, shared a touching Instagram post with the simple caption: “We love and miss you always, Malcolm [dove emoji]. Happy Birthday. [heart emoji]”

Duck Down Music remembered Mac on IG with an equally poignant, yet simple post: a photo of the Pittsburgh artist with Duck Down’s own lost act, Sean Price.

Other friends sending love to Mac Miller on his birthday included Dre from The Gooneez, Rockie Fresh, and Peter Rosenberg.

Kosha Dillz used the occasion to draw attention to what he believes is an injustice in the way Gangsta Boo‘s death is being treated in comparison to his late friend.

“Mac Miller would’ve been 31 today,” Dills tweeted. “What I find heartbreaking is that the entire world went after the person who sold him fentanyl yet Gangsta Boo died from the same and there is no uproar. Mac Miller would’ve wanted to find out who poisoned Gangsta Boo. Its def killing others.”

While sources close to Boo told TMZ that they believed a fetanyl-laced substance was responsible for the Memphis rapper’s January 1 death, an official cause of death has yet to be confirmed.

On Wednesday (January 18), Rostrum announced on Twitter that Mac Miller’s 2010 mixtape K.I.D.S. has surpased 1 billion streams on Spotify.

K.I.D.S., which stands for Kickin’ Incredibly Dope Shit, was inspired by the 1995 coming-of-age movie of the same name. It was his fourth mixtape and featured notable tracks such as “Nikes on My Feet” and “Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza.”

The project hit streaming platforms for the first time in April 2020 after it was originally released as a free download on DatPiff a decade ago. It debuted at No. 112 on the Billboard 200 chart with roughly 9,000 total album equivalent units earned.

The following August, Rostrum Records released a deluxe version of the mixtape, featuring new tracks “Ayye” and “Back in the Day” to extend the project to 18 songs in total.

Mac’s other mixtapes include: Best Day Ever (2011); I Love Life, Thank You (2011); Macadelic (2012); Faces (2014) and more.
