#Luis Guillorme sticking in Mets’ lineup as hitting heats up

“Luis Guillorme sticking in Mets’ lineup as hitting heats up”

SAN FRANCISCO — Luis Guillorme’s job description with the Mets reads “be ready for anything.”

A versatile piece noted mostly for his glove throughout his career, the 27-year-old Guillorme is starting to gain attention for his bat, leaving manager Buck Showalter with tougher decisions on a daily basis about lineup construction.

Guillorme entered Monday with a .395/.439/.526 slash line in 41 plate appearances for May and returned to the bench after four straight starts. The Mets have needed the offensive contributions, with players such as Eduardo Escobar, Dominic Smith and J.D. Davis struggling at the plate.

“It’s a little different playing a little more than usual, but I’m just being more consistent coming off the bench,” Guillorme said. “Even when I was struggling at the beginning of the year, I felt I was hitting the ball straight at people. The main difference now is my swing is at a spot where I can repeat it. I’m swinging at pitches and having good at-bats.”

Those at-bats usually entail swinging at strikes.

“That is one of the things I take pride in is being consistent at the plate and having good at-bats, whether it’s coming off the bench, whether it’s starting, whatever it is,” Guillorme said. “My goal every day if I am starting is to go out there and get a hit or a walk.”

Along the way, he and Francisco Lindor have formed a solid double-play combination. On other days Guillorme can play third base — he started there Sunday in Colorado and his diving stop on a grounder in the seventh inning with two runners on base was a key defensive play in the team’s victory.

“I am super happy for him,” Lindor said. “He’s ready every day, no matter what. If he enters in the seventh he’s ready. The reason he has success is he embraces his role and he wants to play every day, everybody wants to play every day, but he’s embraced his role and he’s giving it his best.”

Lindor was asked about Guillorme as a double-play partner.

“He’s a slick infielder and it makes it easier on me,” Lindor said. “I just throw the ball and know he is going to be there [at second base]. He is very reliable.”

Guillorme said the fact he and Lindor have comparable defensive styles helps.

“It’s easy to go out there and perform when he’s out there and keep it loose,” Guillorme said. “We’re always communicating and 98 or 99 percent of the time on the same page.”

Robinson Cano’s release this month opened playing time for Davis and Smith in the DH spot, but more subtly created opportunities for Guillorme, allowing him to play second with Jeff McNeil in left field.

“[Guillorme] has got good bat and ball skills,” Showalter said. “He’s a valuable guy because he can do so many things for us, on a day some guys need a day [off]. I have been kidding around, he’s been playing too much. He doesn’t take himself too seriously, but Luis is a big part of our club because it’s hard to find people who can do what he does at different positions.”

Showalter has also come to appreciate Guillorme’s inquisitive nature.

“A guy that’s always thinking the game, asking me ‘Stump the manager’ questions, and is constantly good at it,” Showalter said. “He’s engaged.”
