Lorde has shared the video for her new single “What Was That.” The video features footage from Washington Square Park in New York shot earlier this week when Lorde made an impromptu appearance to promote her return. Check it out below.
Lorde is credited as a co-producer on “What Was That” alongside Jim-E Stack and Dan Nigro. The latter is best known for his work with Chappell Roan and Olivia Rodrigo while Jim-E Stack is a regular Charli xcx collaborator.and has also worked with Caroline Polachek and Bon Iver.
“What Was That” is Lorde’s first solo release since she dropped Solar Power in 2021. Since the release of that album she has covered Talking Heads for an A24 compilation and collaborated with Marlon Williams on a song sung in his native Māori language. She also appeared on a remix of Charli xcx’s Brat single “Girl, so confusing.” It is widely assumed that the original version of the song, about an awkward relationship with a fellow pop star, was written about Lorde. They recently performed the song together at weekend one of Coachella 2025.
