Lizzo has confirmed that she has changed a line in her latest single “Grrrls” after fans pointed out it contained ableist language. The original version of the song, which dropped on June 10, included the lyric: “Hold my bag, bitch, hold my bag / Do you see this shit? I’ma spaz.” Lizzo has now changed that last section to “Hold me back.” The updated version of the song can be heard below.

In a statement posted on social media, Lizzo said: “It’s been brought to my attention that there is a harmful word in my new song ‘Grrrls.’ Let me make one thing clear: I never want to promote derogatory language. As a fat Black woman in America, I’ve had many hurtful words used against me, so I understand the power words can have (whether intentionally, or in my case, unintentionally). I’m proud to say there’s a new version of “Grrrls” with a lyric change. This is the result of me listening and taking action. As an influential artist, I’m dedicated to being part of the change I’ve been waiting to see in the world. Xoxo, Lizzo”

“Grrrls” will feature on Lizzo’s new album Special. The follow-up to 2019’s Cuz I Love You is out on July 15 and also features recent single “About Damn Time.” She’s on tour across North America in the fall, too.
