The Mets have officially hit a new rock bottom for the 2020 season, losing four straight games to fall to 15-20. After euphoria on Friday, sweeping the doubleheader against the Yankees and potentially getting a new owner in Steve Cohen, they sent fans back into reality with three gut-wrenching losses in The Bronx and one lowly loss to the Marlins at Citi Field. To go over the latest surrounding the Mets, we present a brand new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and me.

I open up with a rant on the state of the team, because with what transpired since that dream Friday, it was needed. I talk about the constant mismanaging from Luis Rojas and continuing to use Edwin Diaz in big spots and with runners on base. How many more times does he need to fail to realize he is terrible in big spots and with guys on? It’s the same old song with this team and Rojas’ inability to trust other guys. Jared Hughes should have stayed out there when it was 7-4. The defense had two errors and the single would have been a routine ground ball if the second baseman was there and there wasn’t a shift. I then dive into the Mets trading for Todd Frazier, Robinson Chirinos and Miguel Castro and why those trades made zero sense and do not make the team any better.

Figgie responds to my rant talking about the sloppy play all around and the defense really hurting them. He talks about the one positive with Seth Lugo having success as a starting pitcher, but the effect it has had on the bullpen and guys having to be overused. He talks about the trades Brodie Van Wagenen made not filling their void, which is a starting pitcher. He says there is still time in the season for the Mets to turn it around, but it needs to happen quickly. We then go back and forth on Rojas and his usage of Diaz, while I would take a rare pack of Dunkaroos for Diaz in a trade. Figgie says change his role and I respond with making him a T-shirt tosser. We get into the schedule ahead and the team needing to go 15-10 at worst to make the playoffs in these final 25 games.

Former Mets manager Bobby Valentine then joins the podcast. Valentine gets into his thoughts on the team right now, how difficult it is to command a clubhouse in your first year as a manger and his first-year experience. Bobby V also talks about Frazier coming back and if it could have an impact, getting Mike Piazza and what it meant for the team at that time and Subway Series memories when it began in his first full season managing the Mets in 1997.
