#Lightyear Trailer Gets Reimagined as Classic PlayStation Video Game

“Lightyear Trailer Gets Reimagined as Classic PlayStation Video Game”

What would Lightyear have looked like if the animated film were instead a video game released in 1999? That’s a question that’s been answered by Hoolopee on YouTube, who has released a fan-edited version of the Lightyear trailer with Sony PlayStation-style animation replacing the crisp, modern CGI that’s seen in the real movie. The video, which you can watch below, is sure invoke feelings of nostalgia for those who remember booting up the original PS1 in the late 1990s.

“This is the first non-game related demake I’ve tried,” the artist says in the video description. “An odd fit, but I enjoyed trying something more cinematic for a change. Mostly hand animated, but used a Vive + Glycon again for a couple of mocap shots. Really speeds up the process. This time I’ve also added some PS1-style dithering too.”

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Lightyear is directed by Angus MacLane and written by MacLane and Jason Headley. The film is a Toy Story spinoff of sorts, though it’s presented as an in-universe movie about the Buzz Lightyear character that the toy Andy receives is based upon. It seems that the idea is that this is the movie that Andy saw as a young boy that really made him want to have the Buzz Lightyear figure. Because it’s not technically the same Buzz, Chris Evans takes over the role that was previously portrayed by Tim Allen. The new voice cast also features Keke Palmer, James Brolin, Taika Waititi, Uzo Aduba, and Peter Sohn.

Lightyear Has Fallen Short of Expectations

Lightyear was a bit of a gamble, as it does spawn from a high-grossing movie franchise, but it’s not your typical Toy Story film. Disney and Pixar had been hoping for the best, but Lightyear has been falling short of expectations with its premiere in theaters. The new dinosaur sequel Jurassic World Dominion has been dominating the top spot and Lightyear is projected to earn around from $51-55 million from its opening weekend. That’s not a bad turnout necessarily but it’s around 25% lower than what the studio expectations had been.

While Evans is a fine actor, perhaps some Toy Story fans still chose to skip the movie based on a new actor taking over the established role of Buzz Lightyear, even if it makes sense with the way it’s explained. Patricia Heaton recently made waves by commenting that recasting the character “castrated” Buzz, and despite the colorful language, she may have many others who agree with her point of view.

“Saw the trailer for Buzz Lightyear and all I can say is Disney/Pixar made a HUGE mistake in not casting my pal Tim Allen in the role that he originated, the role that he owns,” Heaton wrote on Twitter. “Tim IS Buzz! Why would they completely castrate this iconic, beloved character?”

But what do the critics say? At Rotten Tomatoes, Lightyear has scored a respectable 77% certified fresh rating with a higher 87% audience score. It would seem that most people who watch the film enjoy it, even if the powers that be were hoping for ticket sales that were a bit higher.
