The Issue: A member of non-profit VOCAL-NY, who made anti-Asian remarks at a City Council hearing.

Let’s just review how incompetent our elected officials are: Councilman Keith Powers is attempting to push through an incredibly dangerous law, barring landlords from doing criminal background checks on prospective tenants (“Hate in City Council,” Dec. 10).

I mean, why would anyone want to know if they’re living next door to a convicted murderer/rapist?

During a public city hearing on this nonsense, Douglas Powell, a volunteer for VOCAL-NY and a registered sex offender, was allowed to openly spit out anti-Asian bigotry.

Not one member of the council attempted to stop him. Councilwoman Nantasha Williams issued a statement after the fact, somehow making herself out to be the victim.

VOCAL-NY is yet another New York City nonprofit. Through the years, this group has received nearly $3 million in taxpayer money.

It’s bad enough that a hate-filled pedophile gets to spew his nonsense at a City Council meeting without being stopped, but a Queens councilwoman added to it.

I’m not sure if Councilwoman Nantasha Williams realizes that people who don’t look like her can disagree with her, and have it nothing to do with race.

That would involve some introspection, and recently it’s a rare trait in these matters.

This language was allowed to be used because it is an extension of the lack of consequences that is prevalent in our criminal-justice system and school system and society in general.

Everyone should condemn this man and his message immediately. Silence is violence. Sanctioning this speech is giving permission for Asians to be attacked mercilessly without consequences.

Shame on City Council members for not silencing or even removing activist Douglas Powell from a recent meeting.

Asians have every right to live in New York City. Powell was way out of line with his insensitive comments.

In his racial rant at a City Council hearing about monitoring tenants, Douglas Powell attacked the Asian community and complained that Asians don’t want black people in their neighborhood.

Asians just don’t want people like Powell living amongst them. He has already warned society of his character by attempting to molest a young teenager. He is also a member of the leftist hate group VOCAL-NY.

Even more disturbing is that none of the councilmembers had the courage to stand up to Powell’s hateful rant. Any New Yorker could bet that Keith Powers wouldn’t want Powell for his next-door neighbor.

Until I read The Post on Saturday, I never heard of the left-wing activist group called VOCAL-NY.

Learning that a spokesman for the group referred to ex-con, sex offender, bigot Douglas Powell as a “leader” with whom the group would continue to work tells me all I need to know about VOCAL-NY.

With hate crimes against Asians on the rise, a fact acknowledged by the mayor, it’s hard to imagine that a lowlife hate-monger like Powell is embraced by any legitimate group or by the City Council.

What Douglas Powell said about Asian people is disgusting and hateful.

This Level 2 sex offender should have been thrown out of that public council meeting immediately. The things he said were unbelievable, but still the other witnesses who were seated there with him didn’t utter a word. How can they just sit there and let this terrible person say what he said?

I would like to hear what our mayor has to say about this but so far he has said nothing. And people wonder why there’s so much hate in our city.
