#’King of filth’ John Waters joins cast of ‘Mrs. Maisel’

#’King of filth’ John Waters joins cast of ‘Mrs. Maisel’

A beloved cult flick creator is joining the cast of TV’s hottest Jewish period drama.

John Waters, 74, has been cast in the currently in-production fourth season of Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” Variety reported.

The legendarily transgressive filmmaker, best known for writing and directing 1972’s “Pink Flamingos,” 1988’s “Hairspray” and 1990’s “Cry-Baby,” will have a “guest starring role” in the award-winning series’ upcoming episodes. Details regarding the nature of his character have not yet been revealed.

Waters, who has varyingly been called the filthiest person alive, the king of camp and the auteur of trash for his work’s focus on countercultural, underdog protagonists, is an obvious fit for the series, according to some fans on Twitter.

“This is the type of casting where you think, why hasn’t he been in the show since it started?” one “Maisel” viewer responded to the news.

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” — which first premiered in 2017 — is set in the 1950s and ‘60s and tells the story of Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) and her life as a New York housewife with a comedy career.

While the acclaimed show has become a favorite among streamers and critics alike, it has recently been subject to a slate of less than stellar news, with the real people behind the show’s homages coming forward to blast their fictionalized characters.

“A lot of people are saying, ‘That must be you. I love it!’ But I am not a cartoon — and my life is not a joke,” Carol Kaye told The Post in January 2020 of the show’s portrayal of a character with a similar life story to her own. “Nobody contacted me . . . I thought that was pretty bad.”

Melissa Rivers has also complained about the show’s failure to contact her about the fact that her mother, Joan Rivers, was the inspiration for a character.
