“Kimetsu no Yaiba -To the Swordsmith Village- Earns Over 1 Billion Yen in 3 Days”

The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba -To the Swordsmith Village- movie, which compiles the Entertainment District Arc‘s 10th and 11th episodes as well as the Swordsmith Village Arc‘s first episode, has made 1,158,765,410 yen (~US$8.792 million) in its first three days at the Japanese box office.

According to a tweet from the official Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Twitter account, the film drew in 813,422 moviegoers during that period.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba -To the Swordsmith Village-‘s opening weekend gross is only slightly below that of last December’s The First Slam Dunk, which earned 1.296 billion yen (~US$9.4 million).

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba -To the Swordsmith Village- was announced last December along with the April 2023 premiere date for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc, the next season of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba anime adaptation. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc will have an early red carpet premiere event in Los Angeles later this month on February 18.

The first season of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba premiered in 2019 and was followed by Demon Slayer – Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train in 2020. A TV broadcast version of Mugen Train premiered in October 2021, while Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Entertainment District Arc ran from December 2021 to February 2022. The anime is produced by Ufotable with Haruo Sotozaki as director and Akira Matsushima as character designer and chief animation director.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is based on the manga by Koyoharu Gotouge, which was first serialized in 2016 in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine and ended in 2020 with 23 tankoubon volumes. Viz Media describes the manga as:

Learning to destroy demons won’t be easy, and Tanjiro barely knows where to start. The surprise appearance of another boy named Giyu, who seems to know what’s going on, might provide some answers—but only if Tanjiro can stop Giyu from killing his sister first!
