#Kimetsu no Yaiba Movie Becomes Highest Grossing Film in Japan, Surpassing Spirited Away

After its 73rd day in Japanese theaters, Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train anime film surpassed Spirited Away as the highest grossing film in Japan. The film sold 24,049,907 tickets and grossed 32,478,895,850 Japanese yen (roughly $314 million USD). 

Spirited Away, which released in 2001, had previously held the top spot with a total gross of 31.6 billion yen (around USD 305,151,846.40). Other anime that made it into the top ten include Your Name at fifth place, Princess Mononoke at seventh place, and Howl’s Moving Castle at eighth place.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba The Movie-Mugen Train was released in October 16. It notably overtook Titanic, previously the second highest-grossing film in Japan and now the third, in late November and caught attention for its strong box office run. Crunchyroll reported in December 22 that the movie had dominated the Japanese weekly box office for ten weeks straight. 

The movie was also available in select theaters throughout Southeast Asia. Odex Limited is distributing the in Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Myanmar.

Aniplex of America and Funimation previously announced it will release the film in the United States in 2021. 

Aniplex of America describes the first season as: 

It is the Taisho Period in Japan. Tanjiro, a kindhearted boy who sells charcoal for a living, finds his family slaughtered by a demon. To make matters worse, his younger sister Nezuko, the sole survivor, has been transformed into a demon herself. Though devastated by this grim reality, Tanjiro resolves to become a “demon slayer” so that he can turn his sister back into a human, and kill the demon that massacred his family.
