Kevin Gates has become one of hip-hop’s great philosophers, posing questions about life that you can only assume he thought of while extremely bored, or extremely high. (Maybe both). On “President,” his first single of 2022, he channels the energy of his early 2010s mixtapes. A sturdy foundation of hard-hitting drums and a gothic orchestra of synths give his tough-talking bars about hustling room to stretch. Check out the video.
“President” follows a string of freestyles over popular beats Gates released in December, which included him rapping over Young Dolph’s “Talking to My Scale” and Nardo Wick’s “Who Want Smoke.” Gates’ last full-length release was February 2021’s Only The Generals, Pt. II.
