“Kemba Walker nearing deal with Mavericks after Knicks flop”
Kemba Walker may finally be on the verge of finding a new team.
After his Knicks homecoming went bust last season, the 32-year-old Bronx native is nearing a deal with the Dallas Mavericks, Marc Stein reports. The team is “in advanced talks” with the point guard, Stein says, and a contract could be signed this week.
Walker has not played a game since Feb. 16. A week later, Walker and the Knicks agreed he would not play the rest of the season after dealing with knee issues.
“We knew there was risk involved [signing Walker],” Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said after the agreement was announced. “We thought it was worth it. There were some good moments. If he’s healthy, he’s good. So, that’s about it.”
All the hype surrounding the four-time All-Star’s homecoming didn’t materialize into a significant boost for the Knicks. While he had his moments — including a triple-double in a Christmas Day win over the Hawks — ultimately Walker averaged 11.6 points and 3.5 assists in 37 games, the lowest averages of his career. His 40.3 shooting percentage was also his lowest since 2014-15.
The Knicks traded Walker to the Pistons in a draft-night deal in June, and Detroit waived Walker before the start of the season.
The Mavericks (9-10) have lost four straight and are currently in 11th place in the Western Conference, which is so bunched up that they’re only four games behind the first-place Suns. Stein reports that Dallas wants Walker to help with outside shooting off the bench.
