#KAZÉ Anime Nights: So gut war das Boys-Love Double Feature

Last week two boys love films were shown in the cinema. You can read here whether they were able to convince us …

A stranger on the beach

Synopsis:

The focus of the first film is Shun, who fled to Okinawa due to his difficult past and is now doing his work as a writer there. One day he catches the eye of young Mio, who is sitting on a bench near his house and looking out to sea. Both are slowly getting closer, but soon Mio has to leave the island and is not supposed to see Shun again until three years later.

Opinion:

The film begins with beautiful artwork and scenes and tells the story of Shun, who falls in love with the shy and lonely Mio. When they get closer, there is suddenly a leap in time and the relationship between the two is no longer the same as it used to be. The initial affection for Shun turns into blocking behavior and cold treatment of Millions. Mio’s advances fail and family problems with Shun make the relationship even more tense. Again and again there are short scenes in which the two get closer. However, these are interrupted so quickly by sometimes funny family stories that the film gets in its way with the repetitive, unrealistic scenes. All in all, the film was solid, which shone especially with the beautiful animations, but is not a story-wise masterpiece.

Twittering Birds Never Fly: The Clouds Gather

Synopsis:

The film focuses on the masochistic Yakuza boss Yashiro. Although he doesn’t get involved with other people too quickly, his new bodyguard Chikara arouses his interest. Yashiro takes a liking to his subordinate, but is rejected by him for very personal reasons.

Opinion:

While “A Stranger on the Beach” showed tenderness and romance in trains and depicts sexual scenes in a more humorous way, “Twittering Birds Never Fly: The Clouds Gather” gets down to business. It may not be realistic, but all men in the yakuza were without exception homosexual and have (felt) had something sexual with every other man. The film is actually almost exclusively soft porn until the protagonist Yashiro falls in love with his bodyguard piece by piece. Serious issues such as rape and erectile dysfunction are addressed, but the film made no real deeper point. Basically, almost everything in the film was based on ora and anal intercourse. Nevertheless, the film captivates the viewer, as it is obviously shown that Chikara is in love with Yashiro and Yashiro still does things that hurt his admirer. And when it finally got more serious and you get the feeling that the film is getting a happy ending – it ends with a cliffhanger. Despite the absurdity, the film entertained me better than A Stranger on the Beach, as it stayed true to itself more realistically and didn’t feel like it dragged on.
