#Kate Bush Opens Up on ‘Running Up That Hill’ Taking Off on Stranger Things

“Kate Bush Opens Up on ‘Running Up That Hill’ Taking Off on Stranger Things”

It’s been an interesting time for singer-songwriter Kate Bush, who’s been enjoying renewed attention in recent weeks after her song “Running Up That Hill” was featured in the new season of Stranger Things. Thanks to the 80s-set series putting the 1985 song back into the conversation, “Running Up That Hill” became more popular than ever, putting the spotlight back on Bush. The song became her first No. 1 single in the UK since 1978 and reached No. 4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 — her first Top 10 hit in the United States.

Per Variety, Bush recently opened up on this resurgence in popularity in a new interview with Emma Barnett for BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, marking her first interview in six years. Bush admits that she was taken by surprise by just how much the song has blown up, though she finds the whole thing “exciting” nonetheless.

“[Stranger Things] is such a great series, I thought that the track would get some attention. But I just never imagined that it would be anything like this. It’s so exciting. But it’s quite shocking really, isn’t it? I mean, the whole world’s gone mad.”

Bush also touched on how new fans are finding different meanings in the song, which she encourages, though she also explains that “Running Up That Hill” was originally inspired by the idea of a man and a woman swapping lives, Freaky Friday style.

“[That] probably [has older listeners] feeling quite protective at the moment, especially when some of their children are saying, ‘Have you heard of Kate Bush?’ They’re saying ‘Er yes, very much so… I really like people to hear a song and take from it what they want. But originally [‘Running Up That Hill’] was written as the idea of a man and a woman swapping with each other. Just to feel what it was like, from the other side.”

Kate Bush Is a Fan Herself of Stranger Things

Kate Bush was happy to have her music be featured in Stranger Things, as she was already a fan of the Netflix series. She commends the show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, for doing something special with the song all these years later.

“I think they’ve put it in a really special place. I mean, the Duffer Brothers created the series and, actually, we watched it from the first season onwards, so I was already familiar with the series. And I thought what a lovely way for the song to be used in such a positive way — you know, as a kind of Talisman, almost, for Max. And yeah, I think it’s very touching, actually.”

The first half of Stranger Things debuted on Netflix on May 27. Fans were forced to wait for volume 2 to see how the season concludes, but the wait won’t be too much longer. The final chapters of the season will premiere on the streaming service on July 1, 2022.
