At TBS, the only remaining scripted shows are four comedies. The Last O.G., which aired in October 2021, has since been canceled. The series Miracle Workers, which aired its third season in July 2021, will have season four aired in November. Chad, which aired its first season in the summer of 2021, has a second season coming in 2022. Lastly, American Dad, which moved from Fox to TBS in 2014, had been renewed for not one but two more seasons in December 2021. The Damon Wayans Jr. comedy Kill the Orange-Faced Bear, previously ordered to series and set to commence its season 1 order in a matter of weeks, has been canceled.
At the moment, TNT only has two scripted shows left on its roster, Animal Kingdom and Snowpiercer. However, Animal Kingdom is ending after its sixth season ends in June, bringing the number of scripted TNT shows down to one. The fates of Impractical Jokers and Tacoma F.D., which airs on TNT and TBS’ sister net truTV, have not been revealed by Variety.
TNT once had quite a few different scripted programs on it. It was home to Leverage, The Librarians, Rizzoli & Isles, the Dallas revival, Falling Skies, Perception, The Last Ship, Franklin & Bash, Claws, The Alienist, The Closer, and its spinoff Major Crimes. TBS was no slouch in the matter, having saved Cougar Town after its cancellation at ABC in addition to several other shows. People of Earth, My Boys, Ground Floor, The Detour, Angie Tribeca, Search Party (switched to HBO Max after the first two seasons), and Tyler Perry’s House of Payne (recently revived at BET).
Why the Change?
When Warner Bros. Discovery reported its first-quarter earnings earlier this Tuesday, it primarily focused on the Q1 results of Discovery. The reason for that was that the combined company did not exist until earlier this month when the $43 billion deal was closed for Discovery to buy WarnerMedia from AT&T, which included WarnerMedia results in its quarterly report for the last time last week.
“2022 will undoubtedly be a messy year,” said CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels.
During Discovery’s Q1 investor call on Tuesday, Wiedenfels said that Warner Media’s assets profit projection from 2022 is $500 million lower than Discovery expected and that Discovery’s better-than-expected results help offset that for WBD. Weidenfeld also revealed that Warner Bros. Discovery is looking to “rectify some of the drivers behind the business-case deviations” across the company. Besides that, Warner Bros. Discovery’s recent decision to shut down the newly created CNN+ “exhibit A” of that strategy, which also seems to include cutting down on TNT and TBS’ scripted content.
