#JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 Moves Up to 75th Place on All-Time Japanese Box Office Charts

In just 21 days, the JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 anime film has outpaced the highest-grossing film of last year, Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time, at the domestic Japanese box office by more than 2 billion yen in the same time frame, with Toho announcing that the prequel film to the JUJUTSU KAISEN franchise had passed 8 billion yen at the Japanese office today. This places the film at 75th place on the all-time Japanese box office charts.

As of Thursday, January 13, JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 has brought in more than 8 billion yen (US$69.59 million) on the back of 5.89 million tickets sold. The anime film has overtaken Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince as the 75th highest-grossing film ever released in Japanese theaters and sits under 2010’s Umizaru 3: The Last Message.

It’s clear by now that JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 will surpass 10 billion yen very soon, overtaking the final gross of Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time, and is likely to soar to 15 billion yen or more–pending any outside influences–, though time will tell when it’ll reach that amount.

MAPPA returned to animate JUJUTSU KAISEN 0, with director Sunghoo Park at the helm and Toho distributing the film in theaters in Japan across 418 theaters on December 24, including 39 IMAX theaters. The anime film had the second-biggest opening weekend in Japanese box office history. It was announced at the end of the JUJUTSU KAISEN TV anime series, which is streaming on Crunchyroll.
