#Judith Ivey climbing back on stage in off-Broadway production

Broadway’s “Morning’s at Seven,” which opened in 1939, is now reopening in off-B’way’s Theatre at St. Clement’s.

Its star Judith Ivey: “I saw it in 1980. Again, 2002. Now, during rehearsal, our temperature’s taken daily. Your time to talk, you take the mask off. Wait your turn. Not your time to speak, the mask’s back on. Maybe arm around the shoulder but no visual hugging.”

About her awards: “Packed away. In a box in some storage unit. I move between homes. New York for winter and in season Nantucket. That’s now in renovation so I’m in my temporary New York apartment. My kids loved summers in Nantucket and always wanted to be there permanently so we’re renovating to make it our full-time address.”

Nantucket in winter? So cold there you could freeze your ad-libs off.

“No. The ocean’s warm.”

Longtime pro Judith on once goofing up: “Long time ago. Chicago. We were playing ‘The Sea.’ My character was a silly little girl. Conversation was about cremation and then somebody supposedly put ashes in my hand. Well . . . I fainted.”

This is only possibly approximately what Judith said because she was talking to me while in a taxi. The sound was deafened by traffic and surrounding noise, plus she was en route to the airport to get to Nantucket and, between chatting with me, was paying her driver with a credit card and saying, “Thank you, sir.”

Additional conversation was muted by the chugging of a truck — so, forget this interview. Just go see the show.

A see-worthy tale?

THERE’s a new book: “The Lost Boys of Montauk.” Having unearthed a shovel of dirt below some assorted local rocks, it is now stuffing up East End noses. Beyond that, a six-episode television series based on it could be coming. For leads the star names being mumbled are maybe Frances McDormand and maybe Timothée Chalamet. Producers say, “Surfer types need to have chiseled bodies.”

Its author Amanda M. Fairbanks: “As a result of my book, folks are not happy in Montauk and East Hampton. I live in Sag Harbor but am considered an outsider.”

Unhappy Steven Gaines and not happy Graydon Carter have already contacted her. She says, “I have now entered a witness protection program.”

Top billing

THE “debt ceiling,” which Washington’s debating, must be raised. Bills accrued by Congress must be paid. Ratified after the Civil War, the 14th Amendment stipulates that the “validity of the public debt of the United States” never be questioned. 1917 it assisted Woodrow Wilson funding World War I with Liberty Bonds. 1939 it authorized Roosevelt to eliminate limits relating to bonds. Refusal to raise the limit of government debts would stop Social Security, Medicare, military salaries and destabilize our currency.

Since 1960, the ceiling’s been raised 49 times under Republican presidents, 29 under Democratic presidents. Congress must pay debts it incurs.

When Trump wanted the ceiling raised, no Democrat voted nay. Now Mitch McConnell says no Republican will vote to raise it. But not to worry: Failing a maybe short painful shutdown, the debt ceiling will ultimately be raised.

Steak your spot

HAPPY Broadway’s back. But, also, restaurants are returning. I was in West 52nd’s great steak restaurant Gallaghers on Monday. 7 p.m. Not normally a theater night. Gallaghers is huge and it was mobbed. Not an empty seat. Go. Dine out. Enjoy. Send me the leftovers.

STYLIST on Seventh Avenue: “Best thing about today’s fashion is — it can’t last!”

Only in New York, kids, only in New York.
