“Jimmy Garoppolo carted off with injury in 49ers vs. Dolphins”

49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was carted off the field Sunday after suffering an ankle injury in the first half against the Dolphins.

The quarterback was slow to get up after being sacked on the 49ers’ first drive. He was carted to the locker room and was later ruled out for the remainder of the game.

The 49ers have since turned to rookie Brock Purdy, whom they selected with the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

San Francisco and Miami are tied 10-10 in the first half.

News of Garoppolo’s injury comes hours after NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported how both he and the team are said to be “open” about his return to San Francisco in 2023.

It’s been a wild year for Garoppolo, who was long speculated to be on his way out of San Francisco following the team’s NFC Championship loss to the Los Angeles Rams in January. Ahead of the 2022 regular season, however, the 49ers signed Garoppolo to a one-year deal to serve as the backup quarterback to first-year starter Trey Lance.

Garoppolo was thrust back under center in Week 2, when Lance, the third overall pick in last year’s draft, suffered a season-ending ankle injury. In his first 10 games this season entering Sunday, Garoppolo had thrown for 2,381 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions.

AT 7-4, the 49ers are currently atop the NFC West standings and hold the No. 3 slot in the NFC playoff race.
