#Jets’ Joe Douglas defends Woody Johnson over recent allegations

Jets general manager Joe Douglas offered a strong defense of owner Woody Johnson, who is facing allegations of inappropriate comments in his role as U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom.

Douglas, who was hired after Johnson was already overseas, said he believes Woody’s brother Christopher, the acting owner, who said his brother is incapable of making the racist and sexist comments he’s accused of.

“I want to be clear what the New York Jets believe in, and that’s every person deserves to be judged by the content of their character,” Douglas said. “And there’s no room here for people who think otherwise specifically regarding the allegations against Woody Johnson. Christopher called me and told me his brother would never make comments like that of any sort. Knowing Christopher the way I’ve gotten to know him over the last year, I certainly take his word on this.”

CNN reported last week that a State Department watchdog investigated Woody Johnson over allegations he made offensive remarks about black men and women. The NFL has referred all questions to the State Department, which has not announced its findings.

Johnson became ambassador in 2017. Christopher has been in charge of the team since then. He hired Douglas in June 2019 as the GM.
