#Jason Kim to Write Crazy Rich Asians Spinoff about Astrid and Charlie

“Jason Kim to Write Crazy Rich Asians Spinoff about Astrid and Charlie”

Crazy Rich Asians‘ Astrid and Charlie are getting their own spinoff, Deadline reports. The romantic comedy, not to be confused with the Crazy Rich Asians sequel, will follow the relationship between Astrid Young Teo and Charlie Wu. Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu, Color Force’s Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, and SK Global’s John Penotti will serve as producers. A potential title has not been named and there is no projected premiere date.

Jason Kim, who was nominated for an Emmy in 2019 and won a Writers Guild Award for Best Comedy Series in 2020 for his work on Barry, pitched the idea to Warner Bros. He is onboard to write the rom-com. Kim’s KPOP, the first Broadway musical about the musical genre and Korean culture, will open this fall.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Crazy Rich Asians introduced audiences to Astrid and Charlie, played by Gemma Chan and Harry Shum Jr. While the film begins with a married Astrid, we quickly watch her marriage implode after the revelation of her husband’s affair: He blames the difference in their socio-economic statuses while she blames his ego for the demise of their marriage. Crazy Rich Asians teased the romantic potential between a newly single Astrid and her first love and ex-fiancee Charlie. During an end-credits scene the two make eye contact at her cousin’s engagement party. It is unclear if Chan and Shum Jr will be a part of the upcoming Warner Brothers project.

Crazy Rich Asians received a Screen Actors Guild nomination for feature cast ensemble nomination, Golden Globe nominations for Best Comedy/Musical and Comedy or Musical Actress (for Constance Wu), and won the Critics Choice Awards for Best Comedy in 2019.

China Rich Girlfriend: The Crazy Rich Asians Sequel

Warner Bros. announced two additional installments to the Crazy Rich Asians universe back in 2018 but, largely due to a pay disparity issue concerning writers Adele Lim and Peter Chiarelli, production was delayed. It was announced earlier this year that writer and Director Amy Wang would be replacing both. Wang won a Cannes Lion award for the short Unnatural in 2018.

The sequel will be based on China Rich Girlfriend, writer Kevin Kwan’s follow up to Crazy Rich Asians. The book, an international bestseller, follows Nick Young, played by Henry Golding and his girlfriend Rachel Chu, played by Constance Wu, on a trip to Shanghai, where Rachel hopes to find her birth father.

Kwan released a final installment of the trilogy titled Rich People Problems, in May 2017.
