Japanese Breakfast has released “My Baby (Got Nothing At All),” as heard in the upcoming movie Materialists starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans. Scroll down to hear the song now.

“My Baby (Got Nothing At All)” is a zippy alt-country song with Zauner debating the merits of dating a broke guy when richer alternatives might be out there. “Only company baby’s got is mine
And that’s sure something,” she sings as she rejects the “cold cash comforts” and settles down with her man regardless of his depleted funds. It was first previewed in the trailer for the movie, which opens in theaters this Friday (June 13).

Materialists is directed by Past Lives director Celine Song and stars Johnson as a New York City matchmaker who finds herself torn between a charming newcomer (Pascal) and her imperfect ex (Evans). Early buzz about the movie suggested it was a throwback to the classic 2000s rom-com era but, in a recent interview, Johnson said she views it as “leaning into the actual really sad side of love” and compared it to Norwegian indie flick The Worst Person In The World.

The movie was scored by the Oscar-nominated Daniel Pemberton. In addition to “My Baby (Got Nothing At All)” the soundtrack (also out June 13) includes two covers by Baby Rose, “That’s All” by Nat King Cole and “I’ll Be Your Mirror” by The Velvet Underground.

Japanese Breakfast’s latest album, For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women), was released in March. Michelle Zauner recently spoke about the movie version of her 2021 memoir, Crying In H Mart, revealing that production on the adaptation is “on pause” after the director Will Sharpe stepped away from the project.
