#Japan Box Office: Sumikko Gurashi 2nd Film Has Stayed in Top 10 for 7 Consecutive Weeks

There was only one Japanese animation film in the Top 10 last weekend. Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Aoi Tsukiyo no Mahou no Ko (Sumikko Gurashi The Movie: A Magical Child of the Blue Moonlit Night), the second anime feature film inspired by Japanese stationery company San-X’s popular mascot character brand, still ranked eighth in its seventh weekend.

Although it had dropped three places from last week, its box-office record has finally surpassed 1 billion yen (8.8 million USD), which is 74 percent of the total domestic gross of the first film Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Tobidasu Ehon to Himitsu no Ko (Sumikko Gurashi The Movie: A Popping Picture Book and A Secret Child) released in November in 2019.

Meanwhile, after staying in the top 10 for seven straight weeks, Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night, the first part of the anime feature film project based on the reboot series that retells the first arc of the original Sword Art Online novel series by Reki Kawahara, finally drops out of the top 10. The second part is scheduled to be released in Japan sometime in 2022.

The live-action feature film adaptation of Fumi Yoshinaga (Antique Bakery, Ooku: The Inner Chambers)’s Kinou Nani Tabeta? / What Did You Eat Yesterday? also disappeared from the top 10 in its seventh weekend. The film has earned 1.32 billion yen (11.61 million USD) to become the 17th top-grossing Japanese film of this year so far.

There were no new Japanese animation films released last weekend.
