Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Aoi Tsukiyo no Mahou no Ko (Sumikko Gurashi The Movie: A Magical Child of the Blue Moonlit Night), the second anime feature film inspired by Japanese stationery company San-X’s popular mascot character brand Sumikko Gurashi, was released in 184 theaters in Japan on November 5, 2021, then earned an impressive 211 million yen on 172,000 admissions to make its second place debut at the weekend box office, behind the latest MCU film Eternals.

The 65-minute film, written by Reiko Yoshida (K-ON!, Girls und Pazner), then made about 250 million yen (2.21 million USD) on 202,516 admissions in its first three days, which was a huge 177 percent of that of the first film Eiga Sumikko Gurashi: Tobidasu Ehon to Himitsu no Ko (Sumikko Gurashi The Movie: A Popping Picture Book and A Secret Child) released in November 2019.

The live-action feature film adaptation of Fumi Yoshinaga (Antique Bakery, Ooku: The Inner Chambers)’s Kinou Nani Tabeta? / What Did You Eat Yesterday? manga made its third place debut with 145 million yen (1.28 million USD) on 100,000 admissions. The well-received 2019 TV drama’s two leading cast members – Hidetoshi Nishijima (Ryota Akitsu in Aircraft Carrier Ibuki) as Shiro Kakei and Seiyou Uchino (Jin Munakata in Aim for The Ace!) as Kenji Yabuki – reprised their roles.

Last weekend’s No.1 film, Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night, the first anime feature film based on the reboot series that retells the first arc of the original Sword Art Online novel series, fell to fifth in its second weekend. And the No.1 film of two weeks ago, Eiga Tropical-Rouge! Precure Yuki no Princess to Kiseki no Yubiwa! (Tropical-Rouge! Precure The Movie: The Snow Princess and the Miracle Ring) ranked seventh in its third weekend.
