“Japan Box Office: My Boyfriend in Orange Live-action Film Ranks 4th in Its Debut Weekend”

The live-action film adaptation of Non Tamashima’s romance shoujo manga Moekare wa Orange-iro / My Boyfriend in Orange released in 223 theaters across Japan on July 8, then earned a modest 167 million yen (1.31 million USD) on 12,500 admission on its first Saturday and Sunday, making its fourth place debut in the weekend box office ranking.

Hikaru Iwamoto, a 28-year-old member of Johnny & Associates’ boy idol group Snow Man, is cast as the film’s male protagonist, Kyosuke Ebihara. The Saturday-Sunday gross of 167 million yen was about 96 percent of that of the 2021 live-action film adaptation of Mayu Murata’s romance shoujo manga, Honey Lemon Soda, also starring a member of Show Man, Raul.

Orange‘s first three-day total had reached 243 million yen (1.91 million USD). Based on the first week’s results, the film could reach around 1 billion yen, the same as Lemon Soda‘s final box office gross. Meanwhile, it ranked 11th in Filmarks’ first day satisfaction ranking with a poor average rating of 3.59 based on 370 reviews.

Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO was down one position to fifth in its fifth weekend. Its cumulative box office gross so far finally surpassed the 2 billion yen mark (15.74 million USD), barely reaching a half of its predecessor Dragon Ball Super: BROLY‘s total domestic gross. Laid-Back Camp: Movie ranked sixth in its second weekend. The Quintessential Quintuplets the Movie dropped two positions to tenth in its eighth weekend, bringing its total to 1.97 billion yen (15.5 million USD).

The French-produced anime film adaptation of The Summit of the Gods manga illustrated by Jiro Taniguchi (Kodoku no Gourmet) was released in 55 Japanese theaters on July 8. Due to its small number of theaters, the film didn’t appear in the overall box office top 10 but ranked second in the Mini Theater ranking of the weekend.
