“Japan Box Office: Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO Beats Top Gun Maverick in Its Debut Weekend”

Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO, the much-anticipated 21st feature film in Toei Animation’s long-running Dragon Ball anime franchise, finally released in 369 theaters across Japan on June 11. The 99-minute film earned 670 million yen (5.04 million USD) on 498,000 admissions on its first Saturday and Sunday. It was enough to become the top-grossing film of the weekend and to beat Tom Cruise’s Top Gun Maverick, which had dominated the Japanese box office for two consecutive weekends.

The film’s first two-day gross was about 82.4 percent of that of the franchise’s previous 20th film Dragon Ball Super: BROLY released in December 2018.

  • 18th film “Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods” (2013) – 683,925,000 yen

While Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO ranked second (3.98/5.0), the highest rated film of the weekend in Filmarks’ first day satisfaction ranking was Teasing Master Takagi-san Movie, the feature film sequel to the TV anime series based on Soichiro Yamamoto’s romantic comedy manga. The 73-minute film made its sixth place debut with 85 million yen (669,104 USD) and ranked No.1 in Filmarks’ ranking with an average rating of 4.11/5.0 based on 322 reviews.
