#Islanders goalie prodigy Ilya Sorokin could be with team soon

Islanders goaltending wunderkind Ilya Sorokin may get his first taste of the NHL as early as this week.

Sorokin’s agent, Dan Milstein, confirmed to The Post on Sunday evening that the 24-year-old netminder is eligible to practice with the team during training camp if he signs an entry-level contract with the Islanders between noon Monday and 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The Isles’ 78th-overall pick from 2014 would also be able to accompany the team during Phase 4, the start of the NHL’s 24-team playoff tournament, but is not permitted to participate as part of the NHL and NHL Players’ Association recent agreement.

The Athletic first reported the logistics of Sorokin potentially signing.

Following negotiations between the NHL and NHLPA, it was decided that unsigned draft picks can sign an entry-level deal and have this season count, enabling them to become a restricted free agent quicker.

In a Zoom call with reporters Saturday, Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello offered little information on the status of negotiations with Sorokin.

“We only have to wait about four, five days to get the answer,” Lamoriello said. “We just got the transition rules. We’ll certainly speak with representation, see where it takes us. At this point, nothing is done.”
