I’ve been seeing a so-called “mass exodus” from Twitter users to a lot of these social media accounts such as Hive and Mastodon, with Hive seemingly out beating Mastodon due to its simplistic sign-up nature. However, despite Twitter losing more than 70% of its workforce due to Elon Musk’s handling of the company, I doubt the site is coming to an end anytime soon.

Is this really the end of Twitter? After 16 years, this is how the bluebird goes down after soaring for so long? That’s the question many of us are asking over these past few days, with the hashtag “RIPTwitter” trending and lots of users scrambling to find a new home.

With Twitter Staff leaving in their droves – half the workforce laid off by Musk, and many more leaving after he sent an email demanding “hardcore” working conditions and long hours, the biggest threat to Twitter isn’t a mass exodus of users yet, it’s the potential for Twitter getting hacked or the servers been under threat. Without the majority of the original engineers, developers, and coders who kept Twitter functioning at the station, Twitter has become a vulnerable target to those looking for an easy meal.

Despite Elon trying to play it cool and make light of the situation, this has to be one stressful purchase that is honestly costing him a lot of money. Replacing employees is easy, but finding those with the knowledge and experience that the previous employees had will be quite the challenge.

So with that being said, if the BlueBird finally falls from the sky, who will take up flight and become the new beacon for human conversation? Will it be Hive, the new social platform focusing on the simplicity of social media, or Mastodon, the free and open-source software for running self-hosted social networking services? Either way, only one may rule, as what made Twitter special is that nearly 80% of the human race came to Twitter to hear other people’s opinions and be mad at it. If we are all split up into many little cradles of social hubs, then it kinda defeats the purpose. If you were to ask me, it is my honest opinion, I still want Twitter to still work, at least to a degree. Hive, is currently managed by two people and has a lot of ways to go before it reaches the status that Twitter once held, plagued by all types of bugs. And Mastodon, is a decentralized social experience that quite frankly many will not be so willing to learn how it functions.

People want simplicity and Twitter offers that in spades. Not to mention, it’s one thing when some notable people migrate to another website, it’s another to convince the common man to follow with you. And to be honest, I don’t see many people leaving until it is absolutely too late. Brand loyalty is a thing that Twitter has earned and despite Elon Musk’s acquisition, many people are loyal to that bird. Guess only time will tell if Elon will be able to turn things around.
