#Interview: polyband anime on the «SHIN CHAN» dubbing, new «Pokémon» licenses & more

For AnimagiC 2024, we asked polyband anime for an interview. Due to time constraints, there will be a longer text interview instead of a video interview!

According to our Interview last year at AnimagiC, we polyband anime again. This time there are a few more questions and they are more current than ever to discuss the publisher’s most pressing issues and licenses. Here you can find out what the simulcast plan for “Suicide Squad Isekai” is all about, what the situation is with the missing “Pokémon” films, what prompted polyband to license “Tamako Market” and “Mushi-Shi” and much more!

Interview with polyband anime:

You surprisingly announced the licensing of “Tamako Market” and the sequel film. What do you think speaks for the title?

We believe that the animation studio Kyoto Animation delivers a unique and consistently high quality with «Tamako Market», as with their other productions! The film in particular has received extremely good reviews in the relevant forums and is known for its high quality and moving story… and that’s why we think that the title definitely deserves a release with German dubbing.

How did you become aware of the anime “Mushi-Shi”, which is rather niche?

Our employee Theo, a lover of particularly high-quality and unusual anime, drew our attention to this title and after we had a closer look at it, we were all very quickly convinced by the content, style and quality. It is certainly a bit “special” and may seem a bit “niche” at first glance, but we are nevertheless convinced that it will find a larger audience. With actor and speaker Philipp Moog, the voice of Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan-Kenobi, among others, we have found the perfect German cast for the main character Ginko. The feedback from existing and new fans of the series has been consistently positive so far. We are also pleased that ProSiebenMAXX that sees it like that and the series on TV from the end of August aniverse is also convinced by the title and will stream it on its platform from mid-2025.

Finally, with season 1, 4 volumes of «SHIN CHAN» will be released again from October 25, 2024 (we reported). RTL2 re-dubbed a few of the first 52 episodes in a toned-down version.
How many episodes will the volumes contain and which dubbed version will be available on DVD?

The 4 volumes will each contain 6 or 7 episodes, making a total of 26 episodes. The dubbed version is the version that was re-dubbed (and “defused”) by RTL 2. We would have liked to have included a few episodes with the “non-defused” version for our “Shin Chan” fans, but unfortunately it was impossible to clear the rights.
(Anm. d. Red.: This toned down version is known to most people from RTL 2 and subsequent releases on DVD, VHS and streams.)

Some people wonder why «Suicide Squad Isekai» is being released here at the same time as the Japanese TV broadcast. The US release and some other countries are showing the series three episodes earlier than Japan. What is the reason for the longer wait here?

We deliberately wanted to stick to the tried and tested “regular” release strategy known and accepted by fans, of running the simulcast parallel to the Japanese broadcast.

Are there any details about the planned dubbed version of the series that you can reveal?

We are currently in the final stages of selecting the dubbing studio and will be able to announce the studio in the next few weeks.
