The house where four University of Idaho students were brutally murdered last November will be torn down, and a memorial will be erected for the four victims.

Of course, we’ve been covering the tragic story of the Moscow murders since late last year. Early in the morning hours of November 13, four U of I students — Xana Kernodle, Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves — were stabbed to death in the home they shared near campus on King Street in the city of Moscow.

Since then, Washington State criminology graduate student Bryan Kohberger has been arrested on suspicion of the murders and taken into custody. As police continue to build their case against him, university students in Moscow have been left reeling from the awful events. Now, it appears at least one question has been answered.

On Friday morning, U of I president Scott Green confirmed the King Street home’s owner has graciously given the building to the college. With that donation, Green explained, the university can take a next “healing step.” They plan to demolish the structure in order to minimize the efforts of those seeking to “sensationalize” the crime scene. In a statement released ahead of the weekend, Green explained:

“The owner of the King Street house offered to give the house to the university, which we accepted. The house will be demolished. This is a healing step and removes the physical structure where the crime that shook our community was committed. … We are evaluating options where students may be involved in the future development of the property.”

The college president added:

“We will never forget Xana, Ethan, Madison and Kaylee, and I will do everything in my power to protect their dignity and respect their memory. Together we will rebuild and continue to support each other.”

Green also confirmed the school is considering a separate memorial for the four victims. It is unclear whether that memorial will be on the location of the soon-to-be-demolished house or somewhere else on campus.

Whatever ends up happening with the remembrance, the demolition is probably a wise step.
